Health & Safety Manager

Permanent full-time

This person will provide an effective (best in class) Health and Safety function including site-wide supporting, advising and leading on health and safety change initiatives.

  • Continually review and update the Health and Safety Plan in conjunction with the General Manager ensuring that Health and Safety (H&S) is firmly embedded within the culture of the organisation and its employees.

  • Benchmark site H&S performance indicators against other sites and industry standards.

  • Develop and lead initiatives to develop an effective H&S Behavioural Culture. 

  • Establish and manage site H&S budget and produce monthly H&S KPI’s, identifying trends and problem areas and possible solutions where necessary.

  • Participate in project planning and execution to ensure the health and safety dimension of site projects (CAPEX or Continuous Improvement) is fully considered at planning stage and changes are planned and implemented appropriately.

  • Develop, manage and help deliver an effective H&S induction programme for all new personnel.

  • In conjunction with the HR Manager, ensure H&S training is proactively managed for both employees and contractors coming on site.

  • Advise, monitor, evaluate and develop H&S policies and procedures that ensure compliance with current Irish and European legislation, and industry best practice and that satisfy and exceed organisational requirements. 

  • Establish and maintain an effective Health and Safety Management System for the plant to achieve ISO45001 standards.

  • Develop, monitor and evaluate appropriate health and safety management audits for the site in liaison with the Site Team. 

  • Ensure that the circumstances of any accidents or incidents are recorded in detail, reported via specified methods and that any supporting documentation is completed promptly.

  • Collaborate with the Management Team, HR and Occupational Health Nurse to provide advice on health and safety practices that will encourage health promotion, improved well-being and reduce risk to employees’ health.


Qualifications and Training needed:


  • Qualified in Health and Safety, NEBOSH or Equivalent.

  • CMIOSH or working towards this Diploma desirable.

  • A minimum of 5 Years post qualification experience in a large-scale manufacturing operation with responsibility for health and Safety ideally in a Food Manufacturing environment.

  • Hands on experience in conducting Inspections, Audits, Investigations & root cause analysis.

  • Experience in the integration of  H&S with Quality Management Systems.

  • Specific background in a maintenance/engineering field would be advantageous.

  • Excellent knowledge of Irish and EU H&S legislation.

  • Knowledge of Health & Safety systems and good practices.

  • Good leadership qualities.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent presentation and IT skills.

  • Strong analytical, organisation and planning skills with ability to prioritise effectively.

  • Able to work on initiative.

  • Ability to adopt a variety of approaches dependent upon situation and context. 

  • Self motivated, Proactive, Assertive and Teamwork oriented.


Able to operate outside core hours when required and travel to other sites on occasions.
